Sucrose In The Industries
Sucrose is used commercially in countless industries, but only two industries can be considered to have a significant dependence on sucrose. Of the industries, the pharmaceutical and food industry. In the pharmaceutical industry, sucrose is relied upon as an additive to medicinal drugs to make them more palatable in the situation that a drug tastes utterly terrible and is difficult to intake based upon its taste. Sucrose can be found in many different drugs both prescription and non-prescription and is the ingredient responsible for, “flavoured,” medications often given to children to convince them to take medication (“The Canadian Sugar Institute” screen 1).
Although Sucrose is used greatly in the pharmaceutical industry, it is much more commonly used in the food industry. Otherwise referred to as, “sugar,” sucrose is found in virtually all pre-made foods (apart from specially marked sugar free products) ranging from fruit juice to candy bars. The food industry consumes most of the 168 million tonnes of sucrose that are produced each year world wide ("How Sugar Is Made" screen 1) this means that the food industry consumes an unimaginable amount of sucrose each year, with this number being on top of the natural sucrose found in some fruits and vegetables. It can be concluded that the food industry consumes the chemical, sucrose, the most each year, and for the foreseeable future will continue to do so.
